Things to Do in Québec City for Adults: Spas, Cider, Late Dinners and Old Stone

The grown-up side of Québec City — Nordic spas, Île d’Orléans cideries, wine bars in Saint-Roch, ghost walks and long dinners inside the walls.

A cobblestone street in Old Québec leading up to the Château Frontenac

Québec City does romance and slow travel better than almost anywhere in North America. Here’s how to spend a trip without a schedule built around anyone’s nap time.

Start with a Nordic spa

The hot–cold–rest cycle is a Québec ritual. Strøm Spa Vieux-Québec sits by the river near the Old Port; Siberia Station Spa is about twenty minutes north in Lac-Beauport, in the woods. Both are at their best in winter, when the steam rises off the outdoor pools into the snow.

Spend an afternoon on Île d’Orléans

Fifteen minutes from downtown, the island has cider houses, vineyards, blackcurrant liqueurs and a chocolatier, all on one loop road. Choose a designated driver or book a guided tour. Late September and October are harvest season.

Eat late, inside the walls

Book dinner for eight o’clock and walk there along rue Saint-Louis or rue Saint-Jean. Steak frites at L’Entrecôte Saint-Jean, Québécois comfort food at La Bûche, a pint at Le D’Orsay across from the Basilica — our where to eat in Québec City list has the rest. Reserve ahead on weekends.

Drink like a local in Saint-Roch and Limoilou

Below the cliff, Saint-Roch is where Québec City goes out: microbreweries like La Barberie, natural-wine bars and young restaurants along rue Saint-Joseph. Limoilou, a short walk farther, has 3e Avenue and its neighbourhood bars.

See art and history at your own pace

Give a morning to the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec on the Plains of Abraham, and another to the Musée de la civilisation. For something quieter, the Monastère des Augustines — a 17th-century hospital monastery — now has a museum, a wellness hotel and a breakfast eaten in silence.

Walk the city after dark

Old Québec is lit beautifully at night. Walk Dufferin Terrace, join a lantern-lit ghost walk, or take the twelve-minute ferry to Lévis and back for the best skyline view of the Château Frontenac.

Where to stay

For a couples’ trip, stay inside the walls so you can walk everywhere — the Château Frontenac if it’s a celebration, a small boutique hotel if it’s not. See our where to stay in Québec City picks.
