Le Monastere des Augustines

77 Rue des Remparts, Québec, QC G1R 0C3, Canada

The Municipal, Provincial and Canadian Federal Governments, under the pro bono guidance of several of Quebec City’s most distinguished hoteliers, invested nearly $60 million into a literally stunning restoration of le Monastere des Augustines, an historic monastery in the heart of Old Quebec. Though the comfortable accommodations are not for everybody (some of the “nun’s cells” have shared baths), no one who comes to Québec City to experience the rich history of New France should even think about leaving without a visit here.

Le Monastere des Augustines

This absolutely unforgettable, wellness-focused hotel and museum is as unique a hotel one can stay at. With a thousand artifacts displayed, this Quebec City hotel is full of 17th century history of Quebec and Canada, and unique in the world. Three young nuns came from France to care for the indigenous peoples of Quebec. And so it would be in this building, le Monastere des Augustines, where the first hospital in North America is founded.

Eventually, Le Monastere des Augustines, established by an order of cloistered Augustinian nuns. They established a health-care system that became a public healthcare paradigm for North America and the world.

Hotel guests can stay in small, but elegant, monastic cells. They are simple rooms  with antique furniture and shared baths. There are larger, traditional hotel rooms with private baths as well.

Lunch and dinner is served in an onsite restaurant. But like the cloistered sisters who lived here several centuries ago, complimentary buffet breakfasts here are taken in silence. The meal is served n an historic breakfast hall deep in the heart of the building. Some hotel guests actually opt to spend their entire stays in silence without devices and laptops.

Tours of the monastery are available to the hotel guests and museum visitors. Here you can handle some of the 1,000 items on display from a collection of 4,000 authentic medical artifacts, and learn about the evolution of medical practices in North America over the last few centuries.

This hotel offers a very unique and different experience. You can stay in one of the oldest buildings of the city. It dates back to the early years of the colony.
